Police have found a car which they say plunged off the edge of a cliff in Queenscliff.

Officers said there was a man’s figure in the car and there were no suspicious circumstances.

Police divers entered the waters off the Queenscliff headland just after 11:00am and found a car sitting on its roof.

A police statement said the man died when his car drove off the cliff and police will prepare a report for the Coroner.

Earlier this morning, police spokeswoman Joanne Elliott said officers rushed to Queenscliff Road, Queenscliff just after 1:40am on Saturday after reports that something had gone over the edge of a cliff.

Ms Elliott said witnesses at the scene reported finding a bruised fence after they heard a noisy bang and eyed a light in the water below.

“When they have gone to have a look they could see lights in the water and of course all suspicions are that something has gone through, a vehicle has gone through that fence,” Ms Elliott said.

“We don’t believe anyone has been reported missing so Northern Beaches police hope to have a clear idea of what is happening once we get the divers in this morning.”

Police carried out an early search of the area from the ground and air after arriving at the scene shortly after it was reported, but it was suspended due to poor visibility and dangerous conditions.

Officers commenced the search again at very first light this morning.

Laura Vize, who lives in an apartment overlooking the scene, said she eyed some people sitting near the fence drinking at about 11:00pm on Friday night.

She said it was a strange situation.

“There is no real explanation for it,” Ms Vize said.

“There’s nothing to display there’s been an accident, no gravel marks or tyre marks in the road that suggest something has gone wrong.”

Nearby resident James Hunt said he heard some noise on the street about 1:00am on Friday night.

“We heard what sounded like maybe an electrical car or hybrid car accelerating up our road . and then just heard what now shows up to be a break in the fence,” Mr Hunt said.

“Later on we heard the choppers flying overhead.

“I was tempted to come out and have a look last night, but when I witnessed the police lights and the sirens and the chopper with the spotlight, I thought it was a manhunt and it was best to stay inwards.”
