Car Hire at Geneva Airport

This information is correct as of May 2015

Whether you’re planning a Swiss city break or a weekend of skiing in the Alps, hiring a car at Geneva airport will get your journey off to the flawless begin.

Where to hire a car at Geneva Airport

Geneva airport falls into two sectors: French and Swiss. If you hire your car in one sector and come back it to the other you might be charged a fee. Rental desks in the Swiss sector are beside arrivals, and include Avis, Budget, Europcar, Hertz, National, Sixt, and Dollar/Thrifty. To reach the French sector go after the signs for ‘destination France’. You will need to go through customs and you will need to display your car rental contract. Car rental companies in the French sector are Avis, Budget, Enterprise, Europcar, Hertz and Sixt.

Petrol stations near Geneva Airport

Depending on your car rental agreement, you may need to palm your car back with a utter tank.

There’s a puny, self service AGIP petrol station across from the car hire drop-off point in the Swiss sector. There are a duo of BP petrol stations on Route de Ferne, a Migrol on Ave Louis Casai, and a Total just across the French border.

Driving around Geneva Airport

As soon as you leave the airport you’ll find yourself on a Swiss autoroute. To drive on Swiss motorways you need a vignette: a sticker that goes in your windscreen. This costs CHF forty (about £28.70) and in the Swiss sector these are usually supplied by the rental company. If you’re renting in France you can buy one as you cross the Swiss border.

Getting to your destination

Here are some tips on getting to, and finding parking, in some of the top destinations near Geneva Airport.

Chamonix Mont Blanc

This world famous ski destination has something for every snow bunny: and every après-ski reveller. During the summer the hiking is excellent, but winter is the real high season.

It takes just over an hour to reach Chamonix from Geneva Airport using the E62 (A40) and the E25 (N205). There are three thousand eight hundred parking spaces in Chamonix; some free and some paid. There are three covered car parks which charge a fee, and some outdoor car parks that are free. You may have to dig your car out after a strenuous snowfall. Look out for signs warning about snow clearing days: if your car gets in the way of a snowplough it will be towed and you will be fined.

Geneva

Posh and cosmopolitan Geneva sits on the banks of Europe’s largest Alpine Lake. Check out our guide to the top things to do in Geneva to learn more about this chic city.

There are three roads into Geneva, and all take inbetween fifteen and twenty minutes depending on traffic levels. The shortest roads are Route de Saint-Georges and Rue de Lyon: turn right when you leave the airport, stay in the right palm lane and turn onto Avenue Louis-Casei. From there go after the road to Geneva. All on-street parking is free on Sundays, bank holidays, and inbetween 7pm and 7am. You will need a parking disc to park on-street: you can buy these from petrol stations and tourist offices. There are underground car parks dotted around the city, albeit these are a lot more expensive than the on-street bays. Some hotels in Geneva suggest guest car parking.

Annecy

With its ancient buildings and azure waters, Annecy ‘(the Venice of Savoie’) is arguably one of the most beautiful destinations in France. It’s the flawless base for a hiking holiday in the Alps.

It takes about forty minutes to reach Annecy from Geneva Airport on the A41. There are nine car parks in central Annecy, as well as a number of pay and display parking bays.
