Four taken to hospital in 6-car crash in Newport News

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – Four people have been taken to the hospital from a six-car crash on Jefferson Avenue at Lee Street Wednesday morning.

Fire officials tweeted about the accident around 7:Ten a.m., originally noting that crews were working to free someone who was trapped.

Chief Steve Pincus with Newport News Fire says two people were trapped in the accident and had to be rescued. Crews were able to free them in twenty minutes.

The accident caused north and southbound lanes to be closed temporarily while crews cleared the scene. All lanes of traffic were reopened shortly after nine a.m.

UPDATE-NEWPORT NEWS-SB lanes now open on Jefferson Ave. Crash still clearing at Lee St. (north of Main St) @WAVY_News

Four people and a firefighter were transported from the scene.

Pincus says the firefighter sustained a minor back injury while helping to rescue one of the trapped persons. The firefighter was taken to an evaluation center and is expected to be OK.
