Alvarez allegedly gasped, hit with pipe in deadly carjacking

Gilbert Alvarez Jr. was attacked and killed Friday by two guys who asked him for a rail from the Mangilao baseball field to their apartment, according to a magistrate’s complaint in the Superior Court of Guam. They allegedly dreamed to steal his truck.

A-Last Amanto Simiron, Nineteen, and Mallo Mangof Sally, Nineteen, on Wednesday were charged with aggravated murder, murder, manslaughter, first-degree robbery, aggravated attack and theft of a motor vehicle, in the hitting death of Alvarez.

Alvarez, 43, was found unconscious on Feb. Twenty four along Presidents Lane in Mangilao and was later pronounced dead. After an autopsy, his death was ruled a homicide. The island’s medical examiner said Alvarez died from a skull fracture and also had lacerations on his face. Police on Monday asked the community for help in solving the case.

Investigators from the Criminal Investigations Division pursued all leads, which led to the identification and apprehension of the two studs alleged to have killed Alvarez, Guam Police Department spokeswoman Capt. Kim Santos said.

On Tuesday, the Guam Police Department arrested Sally and Simiron in connection with Alvarez’s death.

According to the magistrate’s complaint, Sally and Simiron crashed the stolen truck in Yigo after the onslaught. Sally and Simiron were identified as suspects after the questioning of a witness in the area, who witnessed two people walking away from the crashed vehicle toward the Zero Down and Gil Baza subdivisions of Yigo.

After police tracked him down, Simiron allegedly told them that the two found Alvarez at a dugout in a Mangilao baseball field.

The two asked for a rail from Alvarez to their residence in Mangilao, located on Guafi Lane. While in the car, the two spoke in Chuukese about their plans to strike the victim up and steal his vehicle, documents state.

When they were on Presidents Lane, Sally cooed in Simiron’s ear to punch Alvarez. Alvarez stopped the car to let them out, when Sally commenced punching his head repeatedly, documents state.

At the same time, Simiron allegedly exited the passenger door and ran to the driver’s side, where he opened the door and pulled Alvarez out. Alvarez struggled with Simiron and grabbed a metal pipe that was under the driver’s seat to defend himself, documents state.

Sally got out of the car, distracting Alvarez, and Simiron allegedly used the chance to put Alvarez in a chokehold, documents state. Sally disarmed Alvarez, documents state, and then beginning striking Alvarez in the head with the pipe as he was being gasped.

Sally and Simiron both noticed Alvarez was gasping for air and pleaded for them to help, but they disregarded his prayer, according to the magistrate’s documents. Then they allegedly noticed he wasn’t moving or making any sounds. Sally then stopped hitting him with the pipe and Simiron let go of his chokehold, documents state.

They stole his vehicle, a black Toyota pickup on loan from Alvarez’s uncle, and drove away, documents state.

They then allegedly drove to the Zero Down subdivision in Yigo, where they crashed the car and left it at the scene.

While en route to Yigo, they allegedly stole beer from two different stores, but that information hasn’t been verified, documents state.

Sally, when interviewed by police, said Simiron was the primary aggressor and he merely observed as Simiron hit Alvarez with the metal pipe.

Sally has several other prior cases, all in 2016, including allegedly stealing beer and then drinking it from a store in Mangilao on Jan. 31, 2016. He was charged with theft of property and underage consumption of alcohol on Feb. 1, 2016.

He also was allegedly involved in another theft at a gas station in Barrigada on July 28, 2016, where he and another man reportedly stole about $100 worth of beer. He was charged with third-degree robbery and theft the same day.

In another case, Sally allegedly broke a Mangilao resident’s car’s side mirror while she was driving on Nov. 12, 2016. Sally also allegedly punched another vehicle on its side. He was charged with criminal mischief to a vehicle and disorderly conduct.
